By: Maire Turunen

A Guide to a Tree Planting Event offers an inspiring and practical overview for organizing meaningful tree planting activities in schools and communities. The guide walks readers through every step of the process—from planning and preparation to the planting day itself and the follow up care that ensures long term growth. It encourages environmental learning, community engagement, and hands on action, helping participants create lasting positive impacts on their local environment.

Let’s study signs of climate change!

Target group: Recommended for grades 5–9 (10-15 years old)

This workshop, co-developed by the e2a project and Environment Online ENO, invites students to observe signs of climate change. Observations can be made through various physical phenomena in the school surroundings, a nearby forest, or on a special field trip to, for example, a nature reserve or national park. Signs of climate change can also be observed through weather observations and measurements. Is the weather unusual for this time of year, and is this visible in the environment -how?

Let’s explore the nearby forests with our senses!

Target group: Recommended for grades 5–9 (10-15 years old)

The idea of this workshop is to raise awareness by engaging the five human senses -sight, sound, touch, smell, and sometimes taste to deepen and develop a relationship with the forest and the natural environment. This exploration is a form of experiential, mindfulness-based learning that encourages observation, curiosity, and emotional connection to nature -particularly to forests. The workshop also places a strong focus on supporting mental health and well-being, as nature-based mindfulness activities have been shown to reduce stress, increase focus, and promote emotional resilience.

Soil Respiration

Target group: Recommended for grades 7–9 (13-15 years old)
This School Kit introduces secondary students to soil respiration and its role in the carbon cycle. After a short introduction, students can use a practical exercise to learn what soil respiration is, what affects it, and how to measure CO₂ released from the soil with a simple device and a mobile sensor application. In small groups, they estimate the annual CO₂ yield of one hectare of forest land.
